Project Title: 4D GIS/ Location Marginal Pricing
Client: PJM
Interconnection
Platform:
ArcGIS,
ArcSDE, and Microsoft SQL Server 2000
Summary: PJM Interconnection, L.L.C. operates the largest
wholesale electricity market in the world. Location Marginal Pricing (LMP),
developed by PJM, establishes the price of energy purchases and sales in their
wholesale electricity market. LMP takes into account the effect that actual
operating conditions have on the transmission system when determining the price
of electricity at different locations in PJM's market territory.
The LMP is calculated by PJM's computer system every five minutes. Heavy use of
the transmission system typically raises the LMP and congestion in the
receiving area, and lowers the LMP in the sending area. Operating conditions
that limit the delivery capacity of specific transmission lines also
contributes to congestion, and can result in the increase of LMP charges.
Integral GIS, Inc. has been working with PJM to build an enterprise wide GIS
that integrates the LMP process with 2D and 3D GIS visualization.
Result: The integration of ArcGIS with OSISoft's PI
platform enables PJM to gain deeper insight into their own operational
environment.
