Project Title: Port of Tacoma Web Rail Management System
Client: Port of Tacoma
Platform:
ArcIMS,
Microsoft SQL Server 2000, and
Microsoft .NET
Summary: In 2002, the Port of Tacoma strengthened its position
as the leading seaport in the Pacific Northwest by setting annual records in
Auto Import/ Export, Containerized Cargo, Intermodal Activity, and Operating
Revenues. In addition, the Port has made a commitment to road, rail, and marine
infrastructure investments. Integral GIS, Inc. has teamed up with them to
develop and implement a web-based Rail Management System using GIS Internet
mapping tools (ArcIMS in an ASP.NET environment).
This system provides visual and tabular gateways into rail car and container
information collected by a series of AEI (a Signal Software Consultants'
product) and EDI sensors. We have specially designed an interface (ArcIMS and SQL
Server 2000/ASP.NET) that provides near real-time (1 minute delay) display of
the Port's rail infrastructure, as well as its inbound traffic. It allows the
near real-time access of information by the Port's varying interests, and might
be the first step in revealing to Port/Rail users the advantages of using
dynamic maps.
Result: The Port of Tacoma won the 2003 'American
Association of Port Authorities' Technology Award for this application.
